The name DIOSCOREA SYLVATICA was given by the representative of the family Dioscoreaceae – Christian Friedrich Ecklon in 1908. The caudiciform plant, which is typical for its flat shape and cracked caudex, is found in the southern part of Africa. Sylvatica is accustomed to well-drained soil with adequate water. It needs to be oriented in a strong to moderate sunny position for healthy growth. The plant produces a flat caudex up to 1 metre in size. It has heart-shaped leaves that grow from funnels that can easily reach up to 4 metres in length. Its flowers are pale greenish-yellow and are most often propagated by seeds.
