The name FOCKEA EDULIS was given by the representative of the family Asclepiadaceae – Karl Moritz Schumann in 1895. The caudiciform plant, which is characterised by its rounded purple caudex tip in young age, is found in the southern part of Africa. According to the latest taxonomic system APG IV 2016, Asclepiadaceae is now part of Apocynaceae. Edulis is accustomed to well-drained soil with adequate water. It needs to be oriented in a strong to moderate sunny position for healthy growth. The plant produces caudex up to 60 cm in size. Only the seedlings have a caudex that sticks out of the soil. After a few years of growth, the caudex mainly starts to form and expand underground. It has narrow leaves that grow from the lianas, which can easily reach up to 4 metres in length. When they break off, white latex oozes from the wounded area. Its flowers are white and most often reproduce by seed.
